Music Theater

We offer a multi-faceted program of German-language musicals written by renowned authors and composers such as Wolfgang Adenberg, Alexander Bermange, Christian Bruhn, Michael Frowin, Josef Göhlen, Christian Gundlach, Edith Jeske, Rolf Kühn, Martin Lingnau, Thomas Matschoß, and Heiko Wohlgemuth.

Just a few examples: The 13 1/2 lives of Captain Blue Bear, which captures both young and old and leads them into enchanting and fantastic worlds. Successful plays such as Swinging St. Pauli and Heiße Ecke, the musical, which is now in its 8th year at the Hamburger Theater Schmidts Tivoli and has delighted about one million visitors. The Orange Girl, a small and elegant chamber version-musical with magnificent reviews. Munchhausen Junior, performed at the Berliner Friedrichstadtpalast, takes the entire audience on his voyage through time and space.

Stephan Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak’s cult musical Godspell, is among our offer as are all works by Bettina Bartz, the author of new, modernized text versions for classical oeuvres by Mozart, Offenbach and Verdi.

Whale Songs provides works by Ingvar Ambjørnsen, Javier Daulte, Jacobo Langsner, Ottokar Runze, Astrid Saalbach and Colin Wakefield.

There are many examples of current Scandinavian oeuvres, among them Elling by Axel Hellstenius based on Ingvar Ambjørnsen’s bestselling novel “Blood Brothers”. Since its German-language premiere in 2003, the play has been staged 90 times throughout the German-speaking world. In Stuttgart the play is in its seventh year. Since January 2010, its follow-up play Elling and the encounter of the third kind is on stage at the Hamburger Kammerspiele, directed by Michael Bogdanov.

Whale Songs is committed to serving well-established authors as well as fostering new playwrights of exceptional promise. The School of the Unemployed by Joachim Zelter and “Heul doch” by Melanie Arns are just two examples of these exceptional discoveries, whose plays successfully conquered the stage within no time.
